Tummy Tuck Introduction

Struggling with lax skin and stubborn fat in the midsection is a common problem that men and women face. After pregnancy or significant weight loss, it is not unusual to see loose skin, abdominal protrusion, excess fat and weak abdominal muscles in the midsection since this part of the body tends to exhibit contour changes related to aging, weight fluctuations, and pregnancy. Unfortunately, depending on an individual’s skin elasticity, exercise, a healthy diet, and pharmaceutical products are often ineffective to eliminate the problem, this is where a tummy tuck can help.

Fortunately, there is a surgical, cosmetic solution. At Avenue Plastic Surgery in Toronto and Whitby, Dr. Golger and Dr. Romy regularly perform abdominoplasty, also known as a tummy tuck. This popular procedure can repair weak muscles and trim away the loose skin and fat to give you a slimmer body contour. You’ll be in great hands, as Dr. Golger and Romy are widely considered by their patients to offer the best tummy tuck Toronto residents can rely on.

Deciding if a Tummy Tuck is Right for You

What are the first steps of abdominoplasty?

A Deeper Understanding of Tummy Tuck

The surgery is a popular cosmetic procedure for both men and women who are seeking a solution to improve their abdominal contours. The surgery involves techniques that target and remove excess fat and skin, while also restoring weakened or separated abdominal muscles, which creates a flatter, firmer and smoother abdomen. The results achieved through a Toronto tummy tuck will help you reach your aesthetic goals and can help further motivate you to stay in shape through exercise and diet. However, these traditional methods alone are often not sufficient to improve lax, sagging skin, which appears after significant weight loss. Once you have done the hard work of losing weight or giving birth, you may need a little help to restore the abdominal tissue. With expert assistance from Dr. Golger, Dr. Romy, and our enhancement team, the body you have been hoping for with a flatter stomach and slimmer waistline can become reality.

The Goals of the Surgery

When we work with a patient to plan their abdominoplasty, we have the following goals in mind:

  • Eliminate the muffin top so that you can feel comfortable and confident without worrying about any undesirable bulging.
  • Position you to revamp your wardrobe and lifestyle to show off your improved body contour.
  • Remove loose, hanging skin that is hiding the results of your weight loss.
  • Strengthen weakened abdominal muscles.
  • Restore a flatter and firmer abdomen.
  • Create a well-defined and cinched waist to promote an hourglass figure.
  • Help you regain confidence in your personal body image.

Who is the Best Candidate for a Tummy Tuck?

The surgery is an extensive procedure that does require patients to meet the following criteria:

  • Patients should be in good health.
  • Patients should be close to their ideal weight.
  • It’s important that patients are non-smokers.
  • Patients should have a consistent exercise routine.
  • It’s important to remain committed to proper nutrition.

Pregnancy after Tummy Tuck

We always recommend that our patients get abdominoplasty surgery after pregnancy. The main reason for this is that while having a baby can provide unmatched joy, it’s also often accompanied by weight gain. By forgoing your plans of a tummy tuck until after pregnancy, the risk of weight fluctuations decreases. However, if you do get pregnant after your surgery, you shouldn’t have any negative side effects due to your surgery. There is a good chance you’ll eventually need another aesthetic rejuvenation to return to your ideal figure.

What is the Ideal Weight for a Tummy Tuck?

Understanding your ideal weight before a consultation is always a good idea. We recommend that patients have a BMI that is below 35 and ideally under 30. Patients with a significantly higher BMI might have fat below the abdominal muscle, which a tummy tuck won’t be able to remove.

Tummy Tuck After Massive Weight Loss

Many of our Toronto patients are very interested in getting a tummy tuck following a massive weight loss. It’s common to have a lot of extra skin following weight loss and even stubborn fat. During your consultation, Dr. Golger or Dr. Romy will provide an in-depth consultation and give you their recommendations. Depending on your situation, the surgeons may recommend a Body Lift.

What can a Tummy Tuck Surgery Not Do?

Although a tummy tuck can help emphasize the results of significant weight loss by removing loose skin, it is not a weight loss solution. Rather, it is a body contouring procedure designed to assist those who have lost weight and want to create a more aesthetically pleasing appearance. It is important to remember that the surgery cannot protect you from weight fluctuations and the results can be seriously affected by pregnancy and significant weight gain.

Common Causes of a Loose Abdomen

Excessive fat and skin around the abdomen is a common occurrence for the general population and can happen to anyone. In fact, there are a variety of factors that contribute to tummy sagging in all body types.

The most common cause of bulges and abdominal protrusion are aging, pregnancy, and significant weight fluctuations within a short time frame. The condition can also be partly hereditary. Regardless of the cause, a Toronto tummy tuck surgery can be beneficial to you and your body.

What are the Benefits of a Tummy Tuck?

As one of the top tummy tuck practices in Toronto, we’ve had the benefit of treating thousands of patients for body contouring procedures. Below, we’ve included several advantages that we’ve seen firsthand in our patients.

  • The surgery will create a more toned tummy
  • You’ll be able to get rid of a muffin top or bulge in the midsection
  • With the surgery, we’re able to get rid of hanging or extra undesired skin
  • We can actually strengthen the abdomen muscles
  • Gain self-confidence in the way you look, feel, and photograph!

What’s the first step to getting a Tummy Tuck?

The first step is to get in touch by either giving us a call or filling out a contact form. Our team will schedule you for an in-person consultation with Dr. Golger or Dr. Romy. During your appointment, you’ll be able to express your surgical desires. The surgeons will provide a full consultation. Based on their examination, they’ll provide you with their expert recommendations and answer your questions. The team at Avenue Plastic Surgery prides themselves on their honesty with patients and will give the reasoning for their recommendations— helping the patients make the best and most informed decision.

If you’re comfortable with the surgeon’s advice, surgery will be booked, and preoperative instructions will be provided. It’s very important that you follow the guidelines, as it will lead to the best outcome. Your surgeon will ask for your medical history and a list of any medications taken.

You should be open and honest with all of your questions, answers, and surgical hopes, as good communication always leads to the best surgery.

What to Expect the Day of Tummy Tuck Surgery

At Avenue Plastic Surgery, our Toronto tummy tuck procedure is an outpatient surgery that takes approximately three hours to complete.

Patients are placed under a general anesthetic for a comfortable and pain-free experience. An incision is created on the lower abdomen to separate the skin from underlying fatty tissue and muscles. At this point, separated abdominal muscles are pulled securely together with sutures. Next, loose skin and excess fat are trimmed away. Finally, the remaining skin is pulled smooth to create a restored belly that may better fit clothing, allow for easier physical fitness and improved self-esteem.

Muscle Repair

During your surgery, your plastic surgeon will repair the muscles in the abdomen. This is referred to as repair of rectus diastasis. Oftentimes the muscles are stretched and sometimes separated during pregnancy. Sometimes working out can help this situation, but oftentimes, the only solution is surgery.

Tummy Tuck Recovery Process

When your surgery is complete, the surgeons will wrap the abdomen with a comfortable compression bandage. The bandage will remain on for several weeks. The surgeons will tell you when it’s safe to remove it. Because this is a surgery, bruising and swelling are normal. The surgeons might prescribe pain medication to help you recover free of any serious discomfort.

We recommend having someone stay with you for a few days after your abdominoplasty as the surgery can be quite limiting. The highly-trained surgical staff at Avenue Plastic Surgery will provide you with full pos-opt instructions and will meet with you several times after your surgery.

Scars are inevitable with plastic surgery. By choosing Toronto award-winning surgeons, like the ones at Avenue Plastic Surgery, we’ll do our best to hide the scars in inconspicuous places as much as possible. I 100% recommend Dr. Golger!

5 5 Star Rating

I recently had a tummy tuck and breast lift (3 months ago) with Dr.Golger and do not remember the last time I felt so good about myself! I overheard my daughter telling her boyfriend “my mom is like a pig in sh*t since she had her surgery but she keeps wearing my clothes”. Ha! Well if that’s the worst she’s saying…I’ll take it! Thank you from the bottom of my heart! I (obviously) couldn’t have done it without you. That being said…I 100% recommend Dr. Golger!

Drainless Tummy Tuck in Toronto & Whitby

Slimmer Body & Better Recovery — In order to avoid fluid buildup from occurring between the layers of skin and muscles in the abdomen, the space between them that forms, when they are separated during surgery, will not be sealed. This can be done through different methods. Special dissolvable sutures can be used to stick the layers of tissue together, or a special surgical adhesive can be applied. Both methods prevent fluid buildup from occurring between the layers of skin and muscle.

Understanding Drainless Tummy Tuck

About the Drainless Tummy Tuck process

Drainless Tummy Tuck Process

At Avenue Plastic Surgery, we offer a drainless tummy tuck for both men and women in Toronto and Whitby who want a flatter and more toned-looking stomach. This approach to the procedure involves precise execution to eliminate the need for drains to be placed around the abdomen during the recovery process.

Drainless Versus Traditional Tummy Tuck

Traditional abdominoplasty is designed to address a number of issues that can make it impossible to attain a stomach that looks flat, tight, and toned. A traditional tummy tuck involves removing excess loose abdominal tissue, tightening loose abdominal muscles, removing excess pockets of fat, and tightening the remaining abdominal tissue.

Why are Drains Used After a Traditional Tummy Tuck?

During the traditional surgery, the layers of skin, fat are separated from the layer of abdominal muscles. Once the excess tissue is removed, the incision is tightly sutured closed, but the skin and fat are no longer stuck to the muscle layer. As the separated layers rub together, fluid builds up in the space between them. This fluid then needs to be drained from the area. Over time, the layers begin to heal and stick together again which prevents fluid buildup (seroma) from occurring

Benefits of a Drainless Tummy Tuck

This procedure makes the recovery period much more comfortable as it avoids the uncomfortable process of having drains placed in the abdomen and having fluid drained from the abdomen periodically. It also reduces the risk of seroma which can still occur even if drains are used. Suturing the layers of skin and muscles together also helps with the healing process which makes the recovery period shorter.

Recovering from a Drainless Tummy Tuck

A compression garment will need to be worn during the recovery period to help manage swelling and aid in the recovery process. The garment will need to be worn for a few weeks. You will need to rest and avoid physical and strenuous activities for around one to two weeks, though light activity can be resumed after just one week.

How Much Does a Drainless Tummy Tuck Cost in Toronto?

The price of the procedure varies as each drainless tummy tuck is customized to meet the specific needs of each individual patient. Avenue Plastic Surgery does offer financing options to help make the payment process easier on our patients. Questions about price and financing can be addressed during the consultation.

Tummy Tuck FAQs

Your Abdominoplasty Questions Answered

Is Tummy tuck covered by OHIP?

  • An abdominoplasty is not covered by OHIP. Our Toronto Tummy tuck is an elective procedure.

Is a tummy tuck a solution for obesity?

  • No, the surgery is intended for patients who are already close to their ideal weight. While the procedure will help you remove stubborn fat and shed a few pounds, it is not a weight loss surgery.

Can I combine a tummy tuck with other surgical procedures?

  • It’s very common for our Toronto plastic surgery patients to combine their abdominoplasty with other surgeries. When the procedure is combined with breast surgeries, such as breast augmentation, breast lift, or breast reduction, we call this a mommy makeover. A mommy makeover is a common procedure for women after childbirth who desire multiple procedures to get their pre-pregnancy body back. Other common surgeries to get during your Toronto abdominoplasty are liposuction, arm lift, or thigh lift.

What’s the difference between a tummy tuck and liposuction?

  • While the surgeries can have similar benefits, they are quite different. During your consultation, your surgeon will be able to provide their recommendation on which procedure is best for you. During your abdominoplasty, the surgeon will trim excess skin and tighten the abdominal muscles. Liposuction is a body contouring procedure that is used to increase definition and remove fatty deposits. Oftentimes, the surgeries are used in conjunction to provide an optimal outcome. The main difference between them is that while liposuction can be performed on the tummy, it does not tighten the muscles in the abdomen—and a tummy tuck does.

How painful is the surgery?

  • Patients are placed under anesthesia, so the procedure itself is not painful. For a few days after the operation, there will be discomfort, especially when standing. Pain medication will be provided by your surgeon to help with the discomfort. There may also be swelling for a few months in the stomach area.

How many sizes can you go down after the operation?

  • How many pant sizes a patient will down after a tummy tuck is on a case-by-case basis. Many patients go down two or three pant sizes, while others can go down more. If the patient has a lot of loose skin before the procedure, they are more likely to go down more.

How long will the results of my abdominoplasty last?

  • What’s great about the surgery is that the results can last forever. It’s important to stay diligent with a healthy lifestyle and maintain a consistent workout routine to maximize your results. By eating poorly and not staying active, the abdominoplasty results will diminish over time.

What’s the best age for a tummy tuck?

  • Generally, patients are between the ages of 18 and 65, however, the surgery can be done at an older age, depending on the patient’s health. It’s important that the patient is in good health, as the recovery process will be easier.

How much Does a tummy tuck cost in Ontario?

  • The cost of abdominoplasty in Ontario can fluctuate on a number of factors. The procedure is a highly personalized surgery and the final price will be best discussed with your surgeon. At Avenue Plastic Surgery, the procedure costs approximately $8,000.

What happens if you don’t stop smoking before your tummy tuck?

  • We recommend that our patients stop smoking before going into surgery. Smokers are at a higher risk of developing complications and not healing properly. Please be very honest with your surgeon during your consultation. Our talented specialists will provide you with full pre-opt instructions.

Will having a baby impact the results?

  • At Avenue Plastic surgery, we recommend that our Toronto abdominoplasty patients wait until after having children to have their abdominoplasty. While there are many joys of parenthood, it can be difficult on a woman’s body, which is why it’s smarter to wait until after childbirth.

Why Choose Avenue Plastic Surgery?

  • Dr. Alexander Golger is a board-certified plastic surgeon and a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. More importantly, he has a passion for his craft, extremely satisfied patients, and an expert in plastic surgery for the body, face, and breasts.
