What Is A Tummy Tuck?

Tummy Tuck Process
What is the process behind a tummy tuck surgery?
At Avenue Plastic Surgery, our Toronto tummy tuck procedure is an outpatient surgery that takes approximately three hours to complete.
Patients are placed under a general anesthetic for a comfortable and pain-free experience. An incision is created on the lower abdomen to separate the skin from underlying fatty tissue and muscles. At this point, separated abdominal muscles are pulled securely together with sutures. Next, loose skin and excess fat are trimmed away. Finally, the remaining skin is pulled smooth to create a restored belly that may better fit clothing, allow for easier physical fitness and improved self esteem.
The goals of a tummy tuck surgery
When we work with a patient to plan a tummy tuck surgery, we have the following goals in mind:
- Eliminate the muffin top so that you can feel comfortable and confident without worrying about any undesirable bulging
- Position you to revamp your wardrobe and lifestyle to show off your improved body contour
- Remove loose, hanging skin that is hiding the results of your weight loss
- Strengthen weakened abdominal muscles
- Restore a flatter and firmer abdomen
- Create a well-defined and cinched waist to promote an hourglass figure
- Help you regain confidence in your personal body image
What a tummy tuck surgery cannot do?
Although a tummy tuck can help emphasize the results of significant weight loss by removing loose skin, it is not a weight loss solution. Rather, it is a body contouring procedure designed to assist those who have lost weight and want to create a more aesthetically pleasing appearance. It is important to remember that a tummy tuck surgery cannot protect you from weight fluctuations and the results can be seriously affected by pregnancy and significant weight gain.
Common causes of a loose abdomen
Excessive fat and skin around the abdomen is a common occurrence for the general population and can happen to anyone. In fact, there are a variety of factors that contribute to tummy sagging in all body types.
The most common cause of bulges and abdominal protrusion are aging, pregnancy and significant weight fluctuations within a short time frame. The condition can also be partly hereditary. Regardless of the cause, a Toronto tummy tuck surgery can be beneficial to you and your body.
Are You Ready?
Are you ready for a tummy tuck surgery?
This cosmetic surgery is ideal for men and women who are in good general health but struggle with the elimination of stubborn body fat or sagging skin in the abdominal region.
Women who’ve experienced stretched, damaged skin through pregnancy and are no longer planning to become pregnant are usually good candidates for a tummy tuck.
What to expect after a tummy tuck surgery?
Immediately following the completion of your tummy tuck surgery, Dr. Golger or Dr. Romy will wrap your midsection with a clean dressing and a supportive, post-surgical garment that promotes proper healing and controls swelling. There may be some temporary bruising, swelling and discomfort but this is well managed with medications prescribed for you. Most patients describe a sensation of tightness, which persists for 1-2 weeks. It is advised that you walk as soon as you can after surgery and continue to move around slowly but regularly as gentle walking has many post op health benefits.
What is the recovery period like for a tummy tuck?
After a tummy tuck surgery, we advise our patients to avoid strenuous activity by making arrangements to be as comfortable and stress-free as possible. You should plan to take time off work as your surgeon advises and forego running errands or doing chores. Regular workouts and strenuous activity will need to wait for a minimum of 6 weeks post op. In following these general recovery guidelines and instructions provided by Dr. Golger or Dr. Romy, you can recover quickly, reduce health risks and see optimal results.
Is a tummy tuck procedure safe?
Like any other surgery, a tummy tuck procedure will have inherent risks associated with it. Potential complications of a tummy tuck surgery may include scarring, infection and delayed healing. Our enhancement team will discuss procedure safety and related risks with you during planning.
Are there any other treatment alternatives to a tummy tuck surgery?
Although a tummy tuck surgery is a common cosmetic procedure in our cosmetic surgery practice, some individuals are not ideal candidates for the traditional abdominoplasty. In such cases, our enhancement team may recommend other alternative options such as a mini tummy tuck, abdominal liposuction surgery, or non-surgical solutions.
